Project Brief

Background:

By now you will have some good ideas (or sets of ideas) for the two main spaces that are to become parts of your library. There is still a distance to go in developing the design, but you should now have become aware of what is involved in representing and communicating that design through drawings and models. These drawings and models will also be used by you to help imagine and test the design for the whole library building, often before you even attempt to communicate ideas to others. To date, we have been working on an idealised concept with no real context. In this assignment, you will develop an architectural proposal for a fully operational library building for the specific site at the fringe of Brisbane CBD.

The Site:

The site for this design project, Our Library for the 21st century, is a portion of land at the fringe of Brisbane CBD. The site location and information will become available in week 08, including a site plan, contour plans and other site-specific information (please note that the site is different from previous years). You are to consider the site context, the opportunity to engage with the condition and infrastructure around the site, the site in the context of the city, and the role of a library building, and the significance of its presence in the near future. While it is a requirement of this assignment to use the ‘Hall of Knowledge’ (Heroic Space) and the ‘Chamber of Reflection’ (Humble Space) you designed in Assignment ONE, inserting them into a specific context will mean it is inevitable you redesign them. However, it is also essential to maintain and continue to develop ideas that you already developed for the Hall and the Chamber. Your task is to very carefully dispose of the container while retaining the content!

• All site-related information will become available in Blackboard in Week 08.

• The site has existing conditions, and you must address them in your proposal – it is essential to thoroughly study and understand them before you explore your design options.

• You may set floors at any levels you like – consider access to the library from multiple sides of the site.

• Consider your proposition for the library and how it engages with the surrounding context and connects with other facilities, streets and functions in the area/city.

• Your building should be considerate of the subtropical environment and its place in a world of depleting resources, with a focus on sustainable building principles (natural ventilation, the orientation to the sun at different times of the day and seasons in the year, access and circulation, building footprint and overall space requirements, flexible space usage, etc.).

Final Presentation requirements:

• Site Analysis, to be detailed in the week 09 activity.

• A 1:500 Site Plan with a roof plan of your proposed building and its surrounding area, covering at least the A3 size, which is about 140m x 200m in the real scale.

• A 1:100 Ground Floor Plan of the building with the site context. The plan must have a north point and a scale bar to indicate its orientation and scale.

• 1:100 Plans of all remaining floors. All plans must have a north point and a scale bar to indicate its orientation and scale.

• 4x 1:100 Cross-sections through the building. Þ At least two sections must be perpendicular to each other

One of them must be the “Magnificent Drawing”, to be introduced and explored in the Week 07 studio.

They also must include the immediate context of the building.

• At least four sketches/vignettes of different views/spaces with people, furniture and other artefacts within the building that highlights important aspects of the proposal. Each image must be at least the A4 size.

• A model [1:100]. It should be a neatly constructed model with an appropriate choice of materials specifically chosen to communicate your project ideas (discuss with your studio tutor). The purpose of this model is to show the inside and outside of the building. One side of the model should be removable to reveal its inside (see the 3D sectional diagram for an idea). It should also show the terrain, and some existing and new contextual elements, such as trees, cars, people, etc. in and around the building. You need to bring your models for your presentation, but you need to take them after your group’s presentation session.

• A set of design process diagrams (2- dimensional and 3-dimensional) that assist in the understanding of the overall design concept and the key design decisions, including ideas informed by the readings and exemplar analyses.

• Each (set of) drawing(s) must be presented in a sheet with one standard size (A2 or A3). One sheet can have multiple drawings/images/photos.

Digital Portfolio Submission Requirements:

Digital Portfolio is due on Thursday, 05 November 2020. All presentation sheet must be digitised (photographed or scanned) and combined into one PDF file with each page showing one presentation sheet. Ensure your name is on ALL OF YOUR DRAWINGS.

All pages of your Visual Journal must also be digitised (photographed or scanned) and combined into one PDF file with each page showing one or two pages of your Visual Journal.

Your Visual Journal with rough process work, preliminary sketches, scale drawings, diagrams, tutorial notes, in-class exercises, reading and other reflections, exemplars, etc., that demonstrate your research and design development. There is no need to submit pages that you already submitted for Assignment One.

All weekly exercises and analysis (exemplars, planning diagrams, site analysis) are to be found in your Visual Journal, either drawn directly or neatly stuck to pages.

Assessment:

Your studio-tutor will conduct the initial assessment of your ‘OUR Library’ project on your digital portfolio submission. The entire teaching team and the unit coordinator will then conduct further assessment and moderation. Refer to the Criterion-Referenced Assessment (CRA) feedback sheet for assessment criteria.

This assignment (Assignment TWO) requires a significant aspect of independent activity; in some ways, it is a test of your ability to be architecturally discerning as you apply the design process to create spatial propositions.

NOTE:

While the Blackboard Upload portal does not have any size restriction, unlike Turnitin, the network connection can drop if uploading takes too long, especially when files are upload from outside of the QUT network.
