2.02 Darwin’s Finches and Data Description
Background information
Rosemary and Peter Grant performed a series of long-term studies on the finches on the island of Daphne Major in the Galápagos Islands. With its short, blunt beak, the medium ground finch (Geospiza fortis) is adapted to picking up seeds from the ground. In 1976, seeds on the island were diverse and plentiful. However, during a drought in 1977, seeds became more scarce. Once the finches had eaten all the small and medium-sized seeds they had to turn to larger, spiny fruits that were hard to crack open to access their seeds. The graph below shows the distribution of beak depths of the finch population before the drought (white bars) and after the drought (black bars).
Look at this figure, then answer the numbered questions below.
Q 2.01. What type of graph is this?
Q 2.02. What does the x-axis show?
Q 2.03. What does the y-axis show?
Q 2.04. What was the most common depth of beak in the 1976 breeding population before the drought?
Q 2.05. What was the range (smallest to largest) of beak depths in the 1976 breeding population before the drought?
Q 2.06. What was the mean beak depth in the 1976 breeding population before the drought?
Q 2.07. What was the most common depth of beak in the 1976 breeding population that survived the drought of 1977?
Q 2.08. What was the range (smallest to largest) of beak depths in the 1976 breeding population that survived the drought of 1977?
Q 2.09. What was the mean beak depth in the 1976 breeding population that survived the drought of 1977?
Q 2.10. What was the difference in beak size of these two sets of birds?
Q 2.11. How has the medium ground finch population changed after the drought?
Q 2.12. Why was beak depth a suitable character to investigate the evolutionary effects of drought in the medium ground finch?
