Task: In this assignment you are required to capture sound signals from a sensor (microphone), and to analyse the received signals under different conditions in the time and frequency domains. The objective is to build an obstacle detection device using received sound signal.

Part I - Experiment

• Generate different audio tones at different frequencies. These should be pure sine waves.
• Read the content of the files recorded on the computer.
• Play the audio tones on a speaker at a certain distance (say 1 meter) from the microphone and record the received signal. Place the computer that is recording sound in a room on one side of a door and the speaker on the other side. First do the recording when the door is open, then when the door is closed.
• Plot and compare the signals in the time and frequency domain.
• Repeat the experiment several times when the door is open and when the door is closed. Suggest a variable to detect whether the door is opened or closed from the received sound signal (it could be based on energy, frequency, …).
• Estimate the accuracy in your detector by taking several measurements at several times/days and provide the probability distribution of the suggested variable for both cases (door open and door closed).
• By using different tones at different frequencies, recommend a certain frequency to be used for obstacle detection (or door open detection) using the variable that you suggested.

Part II - Report

• Write a report describing the experiment that you did.

Part III - Presentation

• Prepare a presentation of 5 minutes where you orally present the results of the content of the report.
• Use any screen recording software (Zoom, Loom, PowerPoint…) and any presentation software (PowerPoint, Keynote…) to make the presentation.
• Add the URL of your presentation video file to the report and then submit.
