Introduction
A data centre is a collection of huge number of servers also known as server farms that are used to host web systems along with storage of data. The purpose of data centre is to offer a platform to execute applications and store data so that it can be provided to the user, instantly on request. In order to allow several applications communicate with each other, data centers are essentially required in a network. A data centre network (DCN) connects all the data centers resources altogether. The data centre network design depends on the networking devices and kind of physical connection between these devices [1].
The major components of data centre networks are the networking devices including servers, storage and underlying network itself. If considered in detail, data centre network consists of computers, servers, routers, switches, firewalls, security management, storage management and data centre management applications. A single data centre may contain thousands of servers for efficient data storage [2].
Characteristics of Data Centre Network
Following are the important characteristics of Data Centre Network [2].
The smart data centers are efficient because placements of servers are in such a way that it reduces the space required to store the servers. Consider at an instance, to reduce number of racks, the number of servers on one rack is increased. Similarly, the less number of power circuits help to reduce expenses.
The data centers must be flexible enough to scale them as per new requirements in growing organization. For the ever changing enterprise needs, data centers should adapt change to offer better performance in the network.
Data centers must be implemented within the cooling environments in order to reduce overall data center energy consumption. The racks where servers are arranged should have inlet air temperatures so that it promises longer lives of devices.
The data centers must also have documentation that mentions the process and actions to monitor and maintain data centers under certain standard policies. The planning of data centre for its risk management as well as to improve its performance is performed cleanly to as a commitment to stick to its strict procedures.
The data centers must be secured with authentication enabled doors and other security essentials such as video surveillance. The building chosen as data centre must be safe from various external accesses. No unauthorized access should be provided to the building.
The data centre network architecture mainly relies on the arrangement of servers in the data centre. There are two types of connections or arrangements in which servers are placed. The servers are placed in two levels, wherein first level, a switch named as Top of Rack (ToR) connects all the servers placed in same racks. In upper level, all the ToR switches are connected via top layered switches. The placement and connections of switches to server is on the basis of speed and bandwidth of communication network. The data centre architecture should contain connections among devices in such a way that it offers efficient communication experience to the users. Basic architecture of data centre network is Basic Layered Network as discussed below [3].
Network architecture of Data centre is a layered arrangement which has been used since years and is considered as the most efficient one. The layered approach improves data centre scalability, performance and security as well. Figure below shows basic layered data centre network architecture [4].
The main three layers of data centre network architecture are: core, aggregation and access.
Core layer helps in offering high speed to the network as it allows packet switching to manage data flow. The routing protocols are used for optimum packet deliveries in the data centers. Moreover, load balancing mechanisms are also employed in core layer of the architecture. The communication between core and aggregation layer is performed using hashing algorithms.
Aggregation layer provides security as it contains firewall as a main pillar to restrict outside access. It manages network analysis with the help of its security modules.
