Breakdown of Sections

1. A memo to an editor about the dataset

Please look through the datasets listed at the end of these guidelines. You can select any of the datasets listed at the end of these guidelines or choose your own

Write a memo to an editor about the dataset. Please outline what's included in the data, where it comes from, what's missing, and any important limitations to understand about the data. Some other questions to prompt you: What issues will affect your ability to analyze the data? How could you solve them or put them in context for the reader?

Please also find the person in charge of the data who could help answer some of your questions. If you can’t find the exact person, detail the steps you took to try and find them.

2. Three story ledes (including the spreadsheet with calculations)

Do a basic analysis of the dataset and find three possible story ledes (interesting findings that could turn into news stories). These ideas should be based on the preliminary analysis you do with the dataset. For each idea:

write a one-line story summary for each idea outline how you did the calculations (like we’ve been doing to Labs and the Excel Test) include some ideas for other analysis you could do with the dataset that’s related to the idea You will also need to include your spreadsheet (with all your calculations) in your final submission. I will not mark the assignment if there’s no spreadsheet with your submission.

3. A pitch to an editor based on one of your story ledes

Select your most interesting story lede from the previous section and write a brief pitch to an editor. In the pitch, please describe what you think the story is, why it should be told and outline any questions you still need to answer about the idea. Please also include a proposed headline.

4. A list of sources and documents to aid in reporting

Create a list of at least four written sources that will be useful for your reporting (please list specific sources, not general ideas). These sources can be previous news articles, journal articles, government reports, or anything else you find helpful in your research. Please outline some of the key findings from the sources and outline why it’s relevant to your story idea. Ideally, your sources should be a variety of types and represent a variety of perspectives.

In addition to the written sources, please also list at least two people you could interview for the piece (including contact information), a brief outline of why you’d like to interview them and at least three questions you would pose to them during an interview.

5. Peer Meetings and Consultations Meetings

After the pitches are submitted, we'll meet to discuss your pitch and your approach. You’ll be expected to outline your ideas, how you did the calculations and what your plans are for the next step of the project.
