Assignment Task

This assignment will offer you the opportunity to identify issues with data presentation, provide suggestions for improvement and create effective figures of your own. For items you do not need to make a figure, simply review the presented figure and address the sub-questions. For items 8 and 9, please create your own figures using Excel, Prism or other software with graphing capabilities. Submit your completed assignment on Canvas by 9am Friday 3/10.

1. This figure was on the site late 2022 but has been updated since its initial posting after causing a bit of a uproar in various communities.

  • What is the purpose of this figure?
  • Gives information about the average height of the male population in different countries.
  • Does it effectively make the intended point?
  • It does not effectively make the point.
  • What issues can you identify with this graph?
  • A first look at this graph makes it look like men in the Netherlands are three times taller than men in Indonesia which is not true. The vertical axis of the graph does not start at zero and hence the information provided is misleading.
  • How might you modify this figure to simplify or improve clarity? By starting the y-axis from zero.

2. Fraser Evolutionary Rate in the Protein Interaction Network Science

  • What is the purpose of this figure?
  • The purpose of the graph is to demonstrate the relationship between a yeast protein's participation in protein-protein interactions (I) and its evolutionary rate (K), as estimated by the evolutionary distance to a well-conserved ortholog in the nematode C. elegans where each point represents a yeast protein.
  • Does it effectively make the intended point?
  • It does not make the intended point.
  • What issues can you identify with this graph?
  • It does not summarize any central value of the data set. The author is using a reference line that does clearly show if it was a direct or indirect correlation if the reference line was from lower left to upper right, it would show a positive correlation.
  • How might you modify this figure to simplify or improve clarity?
  • Adjust the axis to have better visualization of the data, and remove the outliners.

3. This figure is from a poster presentation describing a program to reduce the length of hospital stay for hip fracture patients.

  • What is the purpose of this figure?
  • The purpose of the figure is to show a decline in the mean time of the  hospital stay for hip fracture
  • Does it effectively make the intended point?
  • It does not make the point intended. The decline is not linear.
  • What issues can you identify with this graph?
  • The color choice of the bar graphs is too dark as the number of days listed on it is not clearly visible.
  • How might you modify this figure to simplify or improve clarity?
  • This data would have been more accurate if it was represented using a line graph instead of a bar graph.
