Task 1 – Summary Statistics

Consider dataset 1.
1. Use the summary function to obtain information on variables in this data file - display the command used and present the output in your assignment. What kind of outputs are given for both numerical and categorical variables?


2. Plot a histogram of 'duration' - display command used and present it in your assignment. Give the histogram an appropriate title of your choice. Comment on the shape of the histogram.

3. Plot a bar chart of 'loan' - display command used and present it in your assignment. Give the bar chart an appropriate title of your choice. Comment on the bar chart output.


4. Plot a stacked or clustered bar chart using the variables 'marital' and 'loan' - display the command used and present it in your assignment. Give the bar chart an appropriate title of your choice, also displaying legend. Comment on the bar chart output.


5. The population in this case is the target market of the banking institution. Find the following:

(a) a 95% confidence interval for the true mean age of the bank clientele population;
(b) a 95% confidence interval for the true proportion of clients with a personal loan in the bank clientele population. In both cases, display commands used.

Task 2 – Hypothesis Testing

Consider dataset 1.
1. Use an adequate hypothesis test to test the following hypothesis: H0: The average age for the different levels of the categorical variable loan is the same.
H1: For at least two levels of the categorical variable loan the average age is different. Display the mean and median age for each level of the factor loan.

As part of the solution state clearly which test you are using and explain why you chose this test. Explain any assumptions tested and results of such tests.

2. Use the chi-square test to test the following hypothesis.
H0: There is no association between the variable loan and the variable default.
H1: There is an association between the variable loan and the variable default.

Task 3 – Modelling

Consider dataset 2.
1. Run correlation analysis to show that a linear relationship exists between the variables X2 and X5 and the variable Y. (Choose the adequate correlation test and give reason for your choice. Hint: command to choose required columns: datared<-data[,c(3,6,8)] where data is the name of the original data set and datared is what we are calling the reduced data set containing only X2,X3 and Y ). State clearly the values of the resulting coefficients and interpret their magnitude and direction. Follow notes on Hypothesis Testing Section 5 for more details of what sort of outputs you should display and interpret.


2. Fit a linear regression line using those X2 and X5 as the explanatory variables and take Y as your response. Remember to test all model assumptions. You do not need to run multicollinearity analysis or check for outliers for this question. Just assume that there is no Multicollinearity and no outliers are present. Is the model fitted adequate for the data being analysed? (For this question refer to the notes on Regression Analysis. )
