Leadership Project

A leadership development consultancy has reported five main challenges facing New Zealand SMEs (Small and medium-sized enterprises) leadership. The challenges are as follow:

1. Developing Employees Skills
A lack of investment in developing and training employee skills is disconcerting the Board of Directors in many SMEs. In some cases, their current CEOs are near retirement age, and it is not clear if there will be any successors internally. Some employees in those corporates have noted that they hardly receive systematic training from their organisations and their managers seldom provide any feedback on their performance. Employees want more professional growth opportunities but report that senior management teams are focused on organisational growth and neglect employee development.

2. Lack of commitment
After interviewing several employees in many organisations across New Zealand, they found an evident lack of motivation among most sample SMEs. The senior leadership in those SMEs have been rewarding some of the managers with monetary incentives but seemed to think only financial incentives motivate employees and have been done in a rather ad-hoc way. Employees across the sample SMEs need the inspiration to make them commit to their work.
The Boards of Director in those organisations have asked how the senior leadership team could motivate employees based on willingness to belong and commit to the entity moving forward.

3. Lack of delegation
The consultancy firm has found that senior management teams across SMEs are the sole decision-makers in most of the reviewed SMEs, leaving some of the frontline managers feeling they have no say in the decision-making process. Senior leadership appear to lack trust to delegate some of the decision-making responsibilities to other managers. This has slowed things down many jobs for frontline managers as they have to wait for the senior management to process, which takes time. Usually, decisions are made and announced without consultation, not factoring in their opinions.

4. Improving employee Mental Health Management
There have been a significant number of incidents of reported depression and anxiety among the employees. It seems the senior management teams in some of the SMEs have ignored these challenges. There have been signs of disengagement, poor performance, and a drop in productivity levels among the employees. Many employees reported feeling that their personal needs are being neglected. This contributes to employees’ health and well-being and the overall lack of commitment and care shown by the entity
