Site Description

A rural road realignment (240 metres) in Canterbury is to be designed and constructed. Assume the traffic grows geometrically at 2% per year. Currently the AADT is 7000 vpd. The road has two lanes with a distribution factor of 1.0 and a direction factor of 0.6.  The percentage of heavy vehicles is 8%. Assume the subgrade CBR is 5. The design period is 30 years.

Design of Unbound Granular Pavement with Thin Bituminous Surfacing (25 Marks) 

1.0 Pavement Structure Design

A pavement structure design is required using the Austroads empirical method for an unbound granular pavement with a thin bituminous surface.  Provide depth information for the granular layers (include a diagram for base and subbase thickness). 

  1. Pavement Surface Design

    1. First coat seal

Calculate the residual application rate (R) for a single coat chipseal with chip grade 4 (available materials with typical ALDs are provided). Where the application rate should be increased by 0.1l/m2 for absorption (due to it being a first coat) and increase by 0.05 l/m2 for urban factor.

Remember there is no texture data for a first coat seal design.  For Td in the 2004 Algorithm you use the assumed value provided in Page 353 of Chipsealing NZ. 

  1. Second coat seal

Two years later a second coat seal is required, the AADT has increased as per the assumed growth rate. A chip grade of 3 is to be used. Sand circle data has been collected and is attached. The shade temperature is assumed to be 15degC.  Assume that 80/100 grade bitumen is recommended. 

Provide the following information for each lane:

  1. Surface Texture variability check.

  2. Application rate for hot binder at the spray temperature, and the total volume of hot binder needed. 

  3. Chip application rate and total volume of sealing chips.
