The definition of leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. Broken down, this can be interpreted in many different ways. If you narrow this “group” down to something small, such as a sports team, you can look at the goal. The goal of this team could be to come out with the champion of their next tournament. The coach could be the one motivating the team to achieve this goal. This group, however, can be generalized much more. The human population could be considered a group. I would say the human population as a whole has a goal of prospering and achieving happiness. When you look at who is doing the motivating, this is where it gets a bit difficult. One day it could be your math teacher, helping you work through that tricky problem and putting a smile on your face. The next day it could be a stranger in the hallway who complimented your outfit, putting a smile on your face. This is why I believe everyone is a leader. Everyone on this earth is helping those around them achieve their overall goal in some capacity. If I think back on my day, I can pick out so many leaders who brightened my day and gave me a push to keep going. These are the small ones, that do not have a huge impact on me. The great leaders in our life, we will remember forever. For example, my volleyball coach last year, Coach Sara, was an amazing leader. My team had a bit of a rocky start and at our first tournament did not win any games. This was clearly hard for us as players who were trying a lot. Our Coach did not let the loses bring her down. She was determined to keep our team motivated and our energy levels up. In volleyball, Coaches often use timeouts to throw off a server. Because of this, if we got an ace after a time out, Coach Sara would do the worm on the sideline. Little things like this were what kept our spirits high and led us to ou first team win.  

Over the summer, I assisted my trainer with summer camp. I ride horses and every summer my barn hosts a camp for the younger kids or those who want to try out the sport. As there is often a large number of children, my trainer often asks me to help her. With children and horses being two of my favorite things it is a no brainer for me. The children are there with the goal of gaining knowledge of horseback riding and overall horsemanship.  I usually start the morning supervising a group of children doing barn chores, while others ride their horses. This works towards their goal of gaining knowledge surrounding horsemanship. They are learning what goes on after they leave the barn in order to keep the horses happy and healthy. When the groups of children switch, I join them in the ring. First helping those completely new with mounting their ponies and holding reins properly. I will continue to stay by their side and give them reminders, such as “keep your heels down” and “eyes up”. This whole time I am being a leader by helping them achieve their goal of becoming better equestrians. Throughout the day, I follow barn rules. This makes me a good role model for all the camp children watching me. They look up to me and if they see me do something they will think it is ok. This is why as a leader you must always be obeying all rules and setting a good example. Overall, horseback riding has given me the opportunity to express my leadership skills.
