Abstract

Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems and is viewed as both an ideology and a process, concerned with solving complex wicked problems in a highly user-centric way. Wicked problems are social or cultural problems with many interdependent factors making them seem impossible to solve. Because the factors are often incomplete, in flux, and difficult to define, solving wicked problems requires a deep understanding of the users involved, and an innovative approach provided by methods such as design thinking. Design Thinking focuses on humans first and foremost, seeking to understand people's needs and come up with effective solutions to meet those needs. It is based heavily on the methods and processes that designers use (hence the name), but it has actually evolved from a range of different fields—including architecture, engineering and business.

Introduction

In order to engage with innovation and problem-solving processes, it is important that you have understanding not only of Design Thinking as a methodology or process, but that you are informed with regards to the overall innovation landscape and the myriad of associated methods, models, processes, tools and techniques that currently exist. During the lecture sessions you would have been introduced to the three most popular (recognised) models.

The IDEO and d.school models are well known as the individuals associated with these organisations, Tim Brown and David Kelley, are attributed with having coined the phrase ‘Design Thinking’. Also, currently IDEO is the largest design thinking company and Tim Brown the most cited individual on design Thinking. David Kelley (d.school) runs the internationally recognised d.school at Stanford University. Model 3 is from Prof. Jeanne Liedtka, a world-renowned business strategist from the Darden Business School. She developed a design thinking process that focuses on what she terms the 4 W’s and Ten Tools. This model is taught in many Executive, MBA and Entrepreneurial programs around the world.

Furthermore, the alternative models (not mentioned here) are just as important and although we do not cover them in the unit, they should be seen as valuable sources of knowledge and learning, each having been constructed to encourage creative and critical thinking. Design Thinking is but one way or many that can be applied to the innovation process and should not be treated as the only way.

Remember Design Thinking is not a silver bullet in terms of guaranteed innovation and success, but rather a tool that if applied correctly, consistently and as an integral part of the company culture, can assist teams in thinking creatively. Successful completion of the Assignment 1 will require you to undertake in depth academic research.

The Assignment Task

You are required to write an ESSAY. This must demonstrate your understanding of the Design Thinking methodology and make reference to the principles of Human-centred Design. In addition, you need to recognise that a variety of problem-solving processes exist, identify these making reference to the number of steps / stages, present the value of the individual steps and how these might differ from other models.

Furthermore, globally many companies are embracing design thinking as a part of their innovation strategy. You are required to identify three (3) of these companies and highlight how, why and where they implemented Design Thinking. What challenge(s) they needed to solve. For example, was it related to products, services, communications or social impact? You need to bring attention to the resulting innovation that occurred by undertaking in depth academic research providing details on the features, advantages and benefits derived from the innovation leading to the particular company gaining a competitive advantage.

1. This requires writing an ESSAY.

2. Demonstrate your understanding of the Design Thinking methodology.

3. Human-centred Design: Make reference to the principles of Human-centred Design.

4. Models: You must document and describe the three (3) established (most popular) design thinking models discussed in class. To confirm, these are:

• The IDEO 5 Step Design Thinking Model

• The Stanford University d.school Model and

• The model proposed by Prof. Jeanne Liedtka from Darden Business School, namely the 4 W’s and Ten Tools approach.

• For each of these you are to provide the following:

a. A brief summary of the Model

b. When was it first introduced?

c. Who developed or introduced it?

d. The number of steps and names of each.

e. How this Model may be different or better than others? Your opinion.

f. Is this Model aimed at a specific industry or audience?

g. Include a single quality / high resolution image with appropriate title and referencing.
