Case Scenario 3: Nafisa
Nafisa and her husband Mustafa arrived in Australia with their two young children Ali (boy) aged 12 and Sana (girl) aged 10, as refugees from Iraq in 2014. The family endured much suffering and hardship before their refugee status was recognized by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). The family spent four years in a refugee camp on the outskirts of Iraq. They have had no contact with the rest of their family and do not know if they are alive or dead. While in the refugee camp, the children attended a small make-shift school set up inside the camp. The children made a few friends at the camp. On arrival in Australia the family spent three years in a detention center. They now live in a two-bedroom apartment in the inner city. The two children attend a local school. Both children have trouble adjusting in school. They are teased by other children, often pushed and shoved, and some children even tell them that they are not Australians. Mustafa is currently unemployed, but a local Iraqi man has offered him to spend time at his car mechanic shop to learn basic skills in car repairs. Mustafa enjoys this as he has been able to meet other men from his country. Nafisa has been attending English language classes. However, more recently she has been experiencing health problems including severe headaches, stomachache, insomnia and waking up in the middle of the night in cold sweat. Nafisa has seen a GP and is currently receiving treatment. Mustafa is worried because Nafisa has isolated herself, has not made any friends, and refuses to meet other families from her country. Upon insistence of some Iraqi friends, Mustafa has brought Nafisa to the family center to see a social worker. You are a student social worker in the family support center and have been asked to meet with Nafisa to assess her situation.
