Life cycle Analysis (LCA) is a powerful tool for assessing the environmental performance of a given product or system. During the course of this module you will have learnt how to perform a basic LCA on a household electrical product and to use it to identify the most environmentally damaging aspects of the product. For this assignment you will be asked to redesign this household product based on the LCA conducted and using the LCA software covered in-class. Your aim is to reduce the environmental impact of the product (e.g. component materials, manufacturing, use, disposal options) and to quantify this improvement using the LCA software.
1.) Identify the main areas of weakness by reflecting on the LCA for your product completed in-class.
2.) Run the automatically generated sustainability report and include this as Appendix A.
3.) Use the LCA software to modify the design to reduce the environmental impact
4.) Run the automatically generated sustainability report comparing the original and improved design and include this as Appendix B.
5.) Write a 3,000 word (max.) report containing the following:
a. An assessment of the original product strengths and weaknesses based on the LCA results
b. A brief discussion of the LCA implications for the environmental impact of the product and the redesign strategy
c. A summary of the key changes and redesign process to reduce the impact
d. A final conclusion stating the percentage reduction in impact achieved, the potential for further improvements and reference to the broader sustainability context.
