The challenges arise because most fiber-reinforced materials do not fracture due to a single dominant crack initiating and propagating. Even when complete disintegration occurs, the process of failure is complex. When a composite fiber breaks, the damage might manifest itself in a variety of ways.
The influence of the crack tip's stress concentration may cause the crack to propagate across the segment (Daniel, 2014).
