BACKGROUD The cell membrane provides a physical barrier between the cell and the extracellular fluid which surrounds it. A selective exchange of substances (nutrients, wastes, ions and water) continually occurs so that the cell can carry out its vital functions. Many substances can pass through the membrane without help (passive transport) while other substances, especially large molecules, require the cell to expend some energy (active transport) before these substances can penetrate the cell membrane.

OBJECTIVES * Remember and understand the key words listed above * Observe diffusion and describe the effects of temperature on the movement of particles.

* Explain any changes in volume which could occur with the movement of substances, including water, across a semi-permeable membrane (cellulose tubing).

2 PROCEDURE PART A: THE DEMONSTRATION OF DIFFUSION

1. Take two 250 ml graduated cylinders. Fill one with hot water and place it in a hot water bath. Fill the other graduated cylinder with cold water and chill it in an ice bath. 2. Place a single crystal of potassium permanganate into each cylinder. Try to choose two crystals that are approximately the same size. Note the starting time.

3. For each treatment, record the time taken for the solution to become evenly coloured (purple).
