Activate Wind Go to Settings to This TMA is worth 15% of your overall score. It covers the following aspects of the module learning outcomes: This TMA is worth 15% of your overall score. It covers the following aspects of the module learning outcomes:
Aim
The main aim of this TMA is for you to demonstrate your understanding of the measurement techniques covered in Weeks. Specific advice and guidance accompanies each question, and you should make sure that you read and understand this information before you attempt your answer. If you are unclear about what is required, contact your tutor for further assistance.
Question
1. a. Determine Young's modulus from the data included in the file labelled 23J TMA_02_Q1_a.xlsx in the TMA 02 resources folder on the Resources page of the module website. These data were collected using a universal testing machine, and all the necessary data are included in the spreadsheet.
i. Briefly describe the method used to determine Young's modulus with this technique.
ii. Give your answer, with any graphs, images or equations necessary to support it.
b. Determine the Young's modulus from the data included in the file labeled 23J TMA_02_Q1_b.xlsx in the TMA 02 resources folder on the Resources page of the module website. These data were collected using the acoustic method, and all the necessary data are included in the spreadsheet.
i. Briefly describe the method used to determine Young's modulus with this technique.
ii. Give your answer, with any graphs, images or equations necessary to support it.
2. Using the four-point bending tool, discuss how comparable measurements of transverse strain are using DIC and the attached strain gauge. In your answer, include the following:
a. A short explanation of how each of the strain measurement techniques works.
b. A description of the methodology you have used to make the data that you discussed from each technique as comparable as possible.
c. A set of figures (images, graphs and/or tables as necessary) with appropriate captions demonstrating the comparability of data extracted from the two strain measurement methods. This should include at least three different applied loads.
d. A brief description of the findings.

a. The data included in the table are from the strain gauges of a hole-drilling rosette gauge. Calculate the principal stresses using the incremental hole-drilling technique. The high-strength nickel being analysed has Young's modulus 210 GPa and Poisson's ratio of 0.33. The values for a and b can be used from Activity 19.2b.
4. Using the four-point bending tool, detail the influence of both applied load and notch size on the transverse strain. Cover the following points in your answer.
a. A detailed description of the methodology you have used to create a set of results suitable to answer this question (there is no need to describe the process of extracting the data from the interactive or the fundamental principles behind DIC.
b. A description of the results you have found, including a written description, images, and both vertical and horizontal line scans from the four-point bending tool. Include a minimum of three loads and three notch sizes in your results.
c. The conclusions you can make regarding the influence of load and notch size based on the data you collect.
To achieve full marks, you will need to include the following in your work:
