Classic Cruises provide holiday voyages to a variety of destinations (usually 7 to 14 days). Typical cruises are “The Fiords of Norway” and “Sailing around Iceland” and each involves optional activities and trips en-route. The places and itineraries of the voyages are determined by the chosen cruise. For example there will be voyages on different dates, possibly in different vessels, all following the same “Northern Lights in the Arctic” cruise itinerary and offering the same trips. Voyages on a cruise may take place in different ships, though at any time there is only one voyage for a particular cruise. Thus MV NorthStar might be used for most of the ‘The Fiords of Norway’ cruise voyages, but other ships might also be used at different times. Similarly MV NorthStar might be used for other cruise voyages. The company has a team of ‘captains’ qualified to act as skippers on all their boats and though there is usually continuity of command, any captain can be skipper for any voyage, subject to having had experience (perhaps as a junior officer) of the particular vessel and of the particular cruise. Each cruise has associated with it a number of ‘trips’. These are typically excursions by road to a beauty spot or concert; or expeditions, e.g. whale watching boat trips and snowmobile treks. Passenger accommodation is in cabins. There are two types of cabin: a standard cabin and a luxury cabin. Both provide twin bed accommodation. For the purposes of this prototype system, you do not need to record detailed descriptions of cabins, except that you should record the floor area of each of the superior cabins. As this is a prototype, you can assume bookings will always be for just two people, sharing a cabin. Trips can be booked at any time, subject to availability, but of course only trips on the relevant cruise can be booked. They form part of the main booking and again, treating this as a prototype, you can assume any trip booking will involve both passengers that are the subject of the main booking.
