Overview

Purpose

This assignment aims to enable students to develop skills in evaluating the relationships between two variables and building a simple linear regression model. Students will develop skills in graphical and numerical presentation and evaluation of their results, interpreting and communicating results and model predictions, and evaluating how good the model is. Finally, the results and methodology need to be communicated clearly and professionally.

Scenario

You have been engaged by the Department of Public Health (DPH), which is interested in developing a new policy for reducing smoking and drinking alcohol. It is often expected that the patterns of smoking and drinking alcohol by adults are dependent on their family circumstances, along with other factors. You have been asked to examine this using the data from the household expenditure survey in Australia.

The DPH asks you to produce a report analyzing the association between the number of dependent children under the age of 15 living in the household and alcohol and tobacco expenditure.

Your report should be well justified, clear and concise, supporting your claims with the statistical analysis outlined in the “Directions” section. 

The report should contain the following labelled sections:

  • Executive Summary: A summary of the analysis suitable for policymakers with key results outlined in plain English. (Word count max 300 words)
  • Data: section outlining what data was analysed and any descriptive statistics.
  • Methods: stating the model equation, the methodology used to estimate it (for example, OLS), and the software used to analyse it.
  • Results: describing your results, featuring tables and graphs. It should also contain interpretation statements of model coefficients.
  • Conclusions : discuss how confident you are in the results and the overall analysis as well as any systematic conclusions and predictions you can deduce from the analysis beyond the immediate results.

Data Section

Shortly introduce the two variables and compute the means and standard deviations of both. Present these calculated sample statistics and the number of observations included in the data set in a table titled “Descriptive Statistics”. 

Explain whether you consider that these variables are related? How strongly? Use both graphical and numerical methods to support your argument.

Methods Section

Write down the equation of the population regression function which you would use to model the relationship between these variables and make sure to explain each element. 

Conclusion Section

  • Interpret the goodness of fit of your estimated model in no more than three sentences.
  • Predict and compare the annual expenditure on tobacco and alcohol of an average household with two dependent children aged less than 15 years with that of a household without children. 

Executive Summary

  • Provide an overall summary of the analysis which includes a description of the approach
  • and outlines key results. This should be written in plain English and targeted towards policymakers.
  • Important If the overall write-up of the report is of low quality (confusing, not understandable, etc), points might be deducted from the Executive Summary marks.
