Assingment Task :

Introduction

The experiment conducted hypothesis’s that participants’ attention is reflexively captured by the cue. Thus, participants respond to the target more quickly when it is preceded by a valid cue than an invalid cue.  This hypothesis was supported as reaction time is faster in the valid cue and slower in the invalid cue. The two conditions were different because if the conditions were the same then no difference would have been found.

Posner cueing task was used to measure the response of time to the cue.  The cue was used to appeal participants towards a fixed location that could possibly have the target stimuli. By controlling the spatial correctness between the location of the cue and the location of the target, Posner cueing task gives a proportion of consideration by evaluating execution for when the to targets happening at the area demonstrated by the signal (Hayward & Jelena, 2013). when a sign occurs at a situation for which the subject is prepared, electrical action is improved in the initial 100 msec following info. This outcome recommends that it should be conceivable to watch this improvement regarding changes in location. There is a lot of proof that information on where an upgrade will happen influences preparing productivity in a complex visual field (Eckstein et al., 2002). Posner’s study concluded that the cue position visual attention, enhances processing at the cued location.

Design

The independent variable consisted the validity of the Cue. There were two variables in the IV, valid  and invalid. The independent variables for valid cue, was X and GO appeared in the same box and in the invalid cue was  X and GO appeared in different boxes.  The dependent variable measured was reaction time to the GO target.

Discussion

The results of this experiment determined that participants respond to the target quicker when it is preceded by a valid cue than an invalid cue. Thus, the hypothesis has been supported.

Although the Bayesian observer can successfully predict human observers’ cueing effects, there are other possible models that include attentional changes in the perceptual quality of the information at each location that could also predict the human cueing effects

  • The setting of the experiment can have an effect of the induvial performance

the onlooker knows from the earlier that high proof (probability) of target presence emerging from the uncued area is expected distinctly to commotion, and not to target presence (given that the uncued area never contains the objective). Along these lines, proof of target presence emerging from the uncued areas just adds to create mistakes (bogus caution preliminaries). Accordingly, for the specific instance of a 100% legitimate signal, the ideal methodology is to totally disregard the data from the uncued area  (Eckstein et al., 2002)

  • When the second most likely target position was adjacent to the most likely target position, its RT resembled the most likely targets. There was a slight (5 msec) nonsignificant advantage to the most likely over the second most likely position in this condition. However, when the second most likely was separated by a position from the most likely, its reaction time resembled the least likely (5%) position

  • These results suggest that for detection-, it is not possible for subjects to split their attentional mechanism so that it is allocated to two separated positions in space

  • From Table 2 it is clear that the requirement to give attention to a second most likely event had no effect on RT to the most likely event.

  • There is no evidence of an ability to divide attention. – further research needs to be conducted
