Design a railway truss bridge, to link banks of a gorge which are 90 metres apart and 50 metres deep. The bridge is for two-track railway and trusses are 6 meters apart. The bridge should be capable of sustaining a maximum total load of 2 MN while the maximum vertical displacement should not exceed 30 mm to prevent derailment. The bridge framing must be stable and poses adequate strength and stiffness to withstand vibration due to passage of trains and turbulence due to wind. Use ST350 grade. 

 

Geometry:

Propose a suitable three-dimensional geometry. Your proposed bridge should have flooring for the tracks and lateral bracing for the lateral stability for the wind loads. Assume all joints are pined-joints. Thus. floor beams must transfer their loads to the truss joints. Model your choice of 3-D geometry in ABAQUS. 
Preliminary sizing Assuming your design is symmetric along the longitudinal axis, you can divide the gravitational loads between two side trusses and take them as plane trusses. Your proposed lateral bracings would ensure that the assumption of plane truss holds. 
 

Modelling: Take one plane truss for the analysis. Since your architecture of truss is such the track loads are transmitted to the joints. you can model the gravitational loads as a number of joint loads. Using manual analysis or otherwise determine the preliminary sizes of all members. Check and refine your preliminary sizes using ABAQUS. How many elements you need to get a reasonable approximation
