Learning outcomes:

This assignment is to be undertaken as an individual assignment. You will design a single-storey, three-bedroom house and provide the necessary documentation for the purposes of explaining the design to a potential buyer. The design of the house is entirely at your discretion but there are some limitations to be observed. The house should fit on a suburban block 20 m wide by 30 m deep. The block's long boundary runs east-west and the road frontage is on the Western boundary. The local council requires a 6 m setback from the street boundary, minimum 900 mm from the side boundaries and 6 m from the rear boundary. The market requirements in terms of garages, laundry, ensuite and family room should be researched and determined by you. The design should incorporate Passive Solar Design (PSD) principles. You should also demonstrate awareness of energy- and water-saving strategies, such as those required by the BASIX program as established by the NSW government.

You will be required to submit this assessment in two stages:

• Stage 1: A floor plan layout for a review by your tutor in Week 3. Please note that submission at this stage is not marked for a grade, it will be checked, giving you initial feedback on your progress towards the final submission.

• Stage 2: The final house design together with all original sketch ideas in Week 5 in your tutorial class. Assessment requirements: You are required to prepare sufficient documentation to clearly communicate your house design. Both floor plans and elevations should be provided, along with site plans & cross-sections. The format is A3 sized paper. You may use pen, pencil, felt pen, crayon, pastels ink, etc to produce the rough sketches required for the development of your ideas. The final result should be neatly hand-drawn and accurately to scale. The aim is to produce a workable plan that will be competitive in the market for mid-range ($700k construction costs, say 260 to 300 m2 in size) project homes in Sydney.

Submission requirements: One copy of A3 house design, plus original rough sketch ideas showing design idea development, bound together with an assignment coversheet submitted to your tutor during tutorial hours. If you cannot attend The College on the due date you should submit the assignment before the due date. Any material that is copied from the internet and elsewhere should be fully referenced. Late submissions incur a penalty at the rate of 10% for each day past the due date except under special circumstances, so plan to get your work in on time. Getting your work in on time is also a good practice for a future professional project manager.
