Assignment Task:

The major assignment is to design and build a mousetrap powered crane device that can lift (height) a small mass away (horizontal distance) from its original starting location. The device must start on the ground and the device must ONLY be powered by an unmodified (spring), single, off-the-shelf, snap-style mousetrap (supplied to each group). The device must be purely passive, with no electronics, counterweights, or any other power source(s) other than the mousetrap spring. The device must fit within a 200mm x 200mm x 200mm envelope and weigh less than 750grams prior to activation, and the only device activation is releasing the mousetrap with a single-action. Marks will be assigned to performance, based on the rubric provided in the performance section of this assignment sheet and (for successful devices) the following equation:

 

The height [cm] will be measured as the distance from the ground to the final (resting) height of the mass when the device stops. The distance [cm] is a horizontal distance measured from the final (resting) location of the mass to the nearest part of the device on the ground plane. The mass [grams] is the mass of the item (self-provided) that the device will be lifting, this will be weighed after the run.

 

Please note the following:

  1.  A single mousetrap will be supplied to each group ? No modifications to the mousetrap spring are permitted
  2.  The mousetrap spring is the ONLY power source for your device (i.e. no electrical power sources, no counterweights, etc.)
  3.  The device must start on the ground
  4.  The device must fit within a 200mm cube prior to activation and weigh less than 750grams
  5.  Only a single action can start your device
  6.  Each group must provide the item to be lifted by their crane device
  7.  No fastening to the ground is permitted (i.e. gluing, bolting, clamping, etc.)
  8.  The device test will be completed in the final lecture, with only two runs per group. Therefore, please ensure your device is well tested prior to the device test day.
