Task:
Dear MANU2172 Students,
I am glad that some of you have started to think about how to do Assignment 1. Two particular questions are worth to be clarified openly. I would like that everyone gets the same reply so that there is no misunderstanding of what is required for the first assignment.
Q1: Noticed that the zero-emissions targets listed for Assessment 1 do not match the actual targets that Victoria has set for the Paris Agreement. Assessment 1 states that the zero-emission target is to be achieved by 2030, however, this target is meant to be achieved by 2050. According to the attached document, here is a summary of the target dates and emission ratings:
- By 2025 - reduction of 28-33% emissions
- By 2030 - reduction of 45-50% emissions
- By 2050 - zero emissions
REPLY: This is NOT an assignment asking you to search well-known information on how to achieve a goal that has been widely publicised. You all know how to find such information from the internet and hence it does not satisfy the aim of assessing if you understand Systems Engineering approach of solving problems. Therefore, this assignment requires you as a system engineer (or the engineer-in-charge of a company) to develop a new system for Victoria to achieve the goal of banning fossil fuel supply in this state from 1/1/2030. You can use the information from the internet on how to achieve carbon neutral in 2050, but obviously that is not enough. You need to be innovative in your proposed system to bring Victoria (not whole of Australia) forward 20 years. Please note the references you need in this assignment is not how other other countries plan to become carbon neutral on their date, but rather is about what renewables or technologies or infrastructure are available for your system to achieve the goal of this assignment.
Q2-1: It is a proposal as acting of a company to design and implement a system for NO sale or purchase of fossil fuel in Victoria in 2030. So, to write this assignment am I the user of the system ? or I am the company to design and implement a system?
REPLY: You are the system engineer responsible to propose, design and implement the system for the "government of Victoria".
Q2-2: The 100% renewable Victoria will commence on the 1st of Jan 2030, so am I designing a system from now to 2030 and beyond ? or the system will be carried out on the 1st of Jan 2030?
This is a "tender" from the "government of Victoria" today asking for proposal of a system that can meet the goal. If there are actions that have to occur now, then the work starts today. If your system design and implementation work can be done at a later date, then you need to clarify when your project start date is. The judgement is the system must be in operation so that Victoria can ban fossil fuel from 1/1/2030.
Q2-3: Is the assignment requiring us to write a proposal or report?
REPLY: It is a proposal of the new system. Systems Engineering V lifecycle has already provided the format: what are the user needs, what is the concept of operations, what are the system requirements, and if necessary, a description of high level design, plus, justification that your proposed system meets the 5 grand challenges.
Q2-4: Needs to be complete in a report format with no more than 20 pages.
REPLY: Since it is a proposal to the busy people in government, you can't make it too long. Please note the 20 pages include everything.
Q2-5: To complete this assignment 1, what's the words limitation and how should I go approach on collecting Datas to support and demonstrate the 5 grand challenges in this proposal ?REPLY: There is no word limit, but due to restrictions in number of pages and font size, it is a challenge. However, real world proposals are all meant to be precise, straight to the point, focused. You need data, but you also need to choose the right data to illustrate your thoughts without wasting pages.
Please remember, this is an assignment for you to practise Systems Engineering Principles. The "government of Victoria" in this exercise is hypothetical, not the real life government.
Regards,
John
