This assessment involves the design and presentation of a clinical project protocol designed to answer a clinical research question. The project will respond to a current knowledge gap in speech pathology practice. The presentation will include a brief summary of current knowledge, identify the aim for the clinical project, and identity an appropriate research design to address the aims, identify outcome measures to be used, explore ethical considerations and describe a knowledge translation plan. 
 

Purpose: 
 The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate their ability to design a practical clinical research project in response to a clinical research question, as well as to demonstrate their ability to articulate research knowledge for a clinical audience. 

Task description 

 Students will select from a given list one of the Speech Pathology range of practice areas, as well as a research question type, and use these to design a clinical research project that aims to answer their research question. This project will then be presented in the style of the presentation of a research protocol. The scenario for this assignment is: in your workplace, you are going to be conducting a clinical research project that either trials an adaptation of an existing face to face treatment approach, or examines client experiences of an existing therapy approach. You need to plan this project and present it to your colleagues? You will need to search the literature in order to find an existing therapy approach that is relevant to your range of practice area. The therapy approach should be reported in at least one recent joumal article (e.g., in a systematic review, RCT, control trial, a single case experimental design, or case-study). 

For questions related to adaptation, the research questions will relate to: therapy intensity (e.g., fortnightly Instead of twice a week) or method of delivery (e.g., telehealth, group v individual). For questions related to client experience, you will examine the experience in terms of barriers and facilitators, or client satisfaction. 
Presentation of research protocol plan (12 minutes — approx. 12 slides): Your presentation will present the protocol for your research.

It must include:

1. Background literature — key findings from existing literature to describe where your project fits within/adds to the current literature.

2. Research purpose, aims, questions or hypotheses for your project.

3. Type of participants that you will include, and justify this (what population will you be targeting and what are the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and why)

4. Setting in which your project will take place (e.g., hospital, school etc.)
