Assessment Two Overview - Design and Rationale Package: 

• Design an indoor classroom and an associated outdoor classroom to support children in either pre-primary / junior primary school (aged 5 to 7 years – early childhood) or in primary school (aged 8 to 11 years).
• You will plan and design an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive learning environment where the physical elements of construction and design features of the two areas (indoor and outdoor classrooms) have a focus on recognising and supporting diversity (social, cultural, cognitive, and physical).
• The design should ensure that both children and families feel welcome. The design should encourage children to participate actively and successfully and should optimise learning and well-being.
• You are required to recognise and respond to the fact that the school in which you are designing an indoor and outdoor classroom space is set in a neighbourhood with a diverse social, cultural, and economic, demography.

Part 1: Presentation/Design

• Research,  plan and draw an ‘idealised’ but practical example of a “classroom” that reflects the need for an inclusive, welcoming and supportive learning environment for students of diverse needs.
• You will need to include: 
• Indoor elements (the classroom itself)
• Outdoor elements (outdoor learning space) - please note this does not include generic areas like the school oval, basketball courts, or major school playgrounds but rather, a smaller outdoor area that links with the classroom and can be used as an outdoor learning space.
• You may draw by hand and scan/photograph your design or use computer-aided design packages (your choice as long as it can be downloaded and inserted into a Word document for submission). Please note rough sketches are not suitable, this must be a polished copy to the best of your ability. 
• You are expected to be innovative and to think beyond a traditional, historical classroom.
• When researching and planning your classroom design, you should achieve a balance between what is desirable and what is realistically achievable. While a budget does not have to be considered, key to the design is to ensure that it is supported by the research, and could ostensibly be a practical classroom in use.
• Ideas presented should be grounded in what research suggests is desirable, and your choices and selections must be justified in the Rationale. The focus must be on diversity and welcome, as well as optimising learning and well-being.
• You will not need to include references in the Design itself, but all elements in the design should be grounded in research, so your choices and selections will need to be referenced in the Rationale.
• Your Design must be carefully labelled and annotated. An annotation may be a brief descriptive statement or sentence. This information will provide those viewing your Design with enough information to recognise each element you have included that supports the concepts from the research.
• All writing (labels and annotations) must be horizontal on the design. No labels or annotations should be angled or vertical.
• You may include a brief legend or key with icons to denote aspects of your design. This is not essential but may be helpful to understand your design.

Part 2: Rationale 

• Provide a written rationale for your design that explains how the design meets the assessment criteria.
• No Introduction or Conclusion required
• Please present the rationale element of the assessment in paragraph form. Do not use dot points, or tables, or images.
• The rationale will describe and include citations from the research which guided and justified your choice and selection of design elements.
• The focus of your rationale must be on how your design is an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive learning environment.
• Discuss where your selection of the physical elements of construction and design features of the two areas (indoor and outdoor classrooms) have a focus on recognising and supporting diversity (social, cultural, cognitive, and physical).
• Use the research to justify your decision making in the designs. In-text referencing is required throughout the rationale, as well as an end-text reference list.
• Your emerging philosophy of teaching and learning should become apparent as you explore the research which has influenced your design.
• The rationale should be written formally (in third person), in paragraphs, with reference to research supporting your discussion.

Part 3: Letter for Families

Prepare a brief one-page letter introducing yourself and the new classroom design to the parents / carers of the children in your class.

• The letter should be written informally, with no reference to research, and should be engaging and welcoming, as well as informative.
• The letter is a personal text, using first person point of view is appropriate. 
• Be enthusiastic, discuss the design elements of the classroom and outdoor space to inform parents/caregivers of your approach.
• The letter must only be one page.
• Keep in mind that letters home to parents / carergivers must be reviewed carefully to ensure that spelling, grammar, tone and clarity is appropriate.
