TASK Scenario You are employed as a manufacturing technician with a local engineering company and have been assigned to an integrated product team who are reviewing the design of their products. You will investigate an assembly of components, being one of your company’s products and will make suggestions for improvements to the product taking into account the principles for design for economic manufacture. Within your workplace, find a simple assembly, or sub-assembly, which consists of 4-6 components in total. This will be the product that you review during this assignment. You will conduct a value analysis of that product Task 1 a) As an introduction to your report, take a photograph or produce a diagram of your assembly and label the diagram to show the name of each of the components. Produce a short written explanation on what your assembly is, its function, briefly explaining how the assembly is manufactured. b) In your value analysis use appropriate headings to identify each of your 4-6 components, including fixings. Examine the product and identify why each component is manufactured the way it is; you should consider the design form, material type and properties, quality requirements, manufacturing equipment and process, processing capability, costs, skills of labour force in the workplace, the impact on environment. c) Produce a speculation on the alternative methods of producing these components, you should consider function, geometry, manufacture and materials. Consider the principles of value analysis and identify any improvements you recommend to introduce the most appropriate manufacturing methods for the product. Task 2 Write an explanation of the advantages and disadvantages of using standardised components on your product by considering how your assembly utilises product standardisation. Any test standards that the component must comply with should also be identified. You should consider each of the following:
Task 3 For the assembly in task 1, choose one component (typically the base component) and using a design analysis software determine the following. a) Use a suitable software to analyse the materials used to produce this component. Identify appropriate criteria that your material should meet, e.g. strength, weight, durability etc. b) Use the software to identify an alternative material that this component could be made from. c) Using the software determine an appropriate manufacturing process for each of these materials. d) Identify which of the materials/processes you would use in preference to the other and why. Task 4 a) In task 1 you will clearly identify evidence that you have taken an effective approach to the study using value analysis techniques, you will also have evidence of research during the completion of these tasks. This meets the criteria for M1 b) In task 2 you will explain how you have applied relevant theories and techniques during the completion of this task. You will have addressed all areas of the task using appropriate methods and will have made an appropriate recommendation regarding the safety margin, in respect of the order that has been requested and the company’s policy for its safety margin. This meets the criteria for M2 c) Throughout this assignment it is expected that you use range of methods to present your work with an appropriate and accurate use of technical language. The presentation of your work will include a methodical value analysis, break even report for your manager, full consideration of the principles of standardisation and appropriate methods being used to select alternative materials and manufacturing processes for a product. d) In this assignment you are required to take responsibility for managing the use of data and investigating the application of the principles of Design for Manufacture, including value analysis and break even analysis. Your work will provide evidence that you have taken responsibility for these tasks by providing appropriate information and by presenting your work in a professional way. This will include evidence of references to show the background reading you have done on these topics.
