Introduction 

In the four coursework exercises you did during the term you calculated the elements of the fixed-step stage of the gearbox. In this piece of coursework, you are going to calculate the CVT stage. 

Tasks 

• Draw a sketch of the CVT (no dimensions required) and explain the role of each element and how the device works. Make it as complete as you can. 

• For a CVT with one intermediary ball (assuming no slip between balls and discs) calculate the angular velocity of the output disc in terms of the input velocity of the CVT the radii of the centre of the ball and the eccentricity. 

• Choose the type of rolling element bearings to support the shafts of the CVT (not exact dimensions, just the type; show them in the sketch) 

• Calculate the torque required at the input shaft of the CVT 

• Explain the main failure modes of the CVT components and choose the material for the discs of the CVT (justify your choice) 

• Calculate the diameter of the balls required such that the maximum Hertzian pressure in each contact is no larger than 1.5 GPa 

• Calculate the diameters of the CVT discs (no need to do any strength calculation, use just geometry) 

• Choose spring and design it such that it generates the required normal force between the discs and the balls of the CVT 

• Design one shaft of the CVT (no deflections or critical speed check needed) 

• Draw an assembly drawing of the CVT; you have to show the case and any auxiliary systems that you think are needed. Isometric or exploded views are not required.
