A number of more common types of CVTs are shown in the table overleaf, with the one you will design in the top right hand corner. The roller in there is used to reduce the Hertzian pressure and allows larger normal force and thus traction forces to be transmitted. A single ball would work better than a roller but the Hertzian pressure would be too large.
The solution was to introduce many balls thus increasing the torque transmitted. If the position of the balls was fixed the device would not work, so the further improvement was to place the balls in a cage which at its turn is placed in a large bearing thus allowing the cage to rotate freely.
The balls will then rotate about their own axis of rotation, transmitting the motion from the input to the output disc but also will rotate with the cage. This allows each ball to transmit a different fraction of the total torque, without sliding.
