Abstract
Team “BDS” was commissioned to design the tower and support structure for a 9.25 MW, 150 feet on shore wind turbine, to be located by the company Enercon. Enercon delineated the variety of load and the range of the operating condition that the tower has to withstand. The safety conditions were specified - a factor of safety of 1.65 for the stresses sustained in the entire tower, a factor of safety of 4 for all connection hardware, and a buckling factor of safety of 4 for the tower under any loading condition. Aside from the mechanical specification, the design is expected to be the most economical design, representing about 15-20% of the entire wind turbine construction cost. The team completed the design through several CAE analyses and manual calculations.

The design must withstand all loading situations and any possible weather conditions specified—the weather conditions in which the design is expected to operate range from standard to extreme. The turbine tower’s final design should be cost-efficient with minimum possible weight, have guaranteed sufficient operation endurance and time, reasonably manufacturable, and must have verified factor of safeties.
Design Constraints
The Turbine Tower is set to be 500 ft tall with the nacelle installed on the top, with a weight of 185,000 lbf. The minimum factor of safety of the tower structure is set to be 1.65, and those for the hardware and buckling are set to be 4. The external force specification and operation conditions are listed, including wind speed, allowable maximum allowable operating temperature range.
Final Design Design Concept Summary
The Final Design of the Wind Turbine Tower from team BDS satisfies the given design constraints, with sufficient safety and cost efficiency. The design is kept at its minimum weight and cross section by adopting a support structure that alleviates deflection under external loads. The support structure consists of six support steel cables and a steel anchor ring. The base of the anchor ring is bolted to the foundation. The geometry of the tower support structure is featured in Figure 3. The hardware spec of the base bracket structure - concrete foundation is the 3 in. diameter bolts positioned along lines spaced 9 degrees apart radially, with 2 bolts on each line. This bolt pattern was chosen as a means of optimizing spacing between bolt locations while also minimizing the number of bolts required to support the structure.
