This assignment involves the design of an ash handling system to transfer fly ash from the collector hoppers under the Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) to a Central Ash Silo. The fly ash is collected in the first row of the ESP which has 16 collection hoppers spaced equally along with the ESP. Each collection hopper has a 0.6m3 blow tank which feeds the conveying pipeline. 

The longest conveying pipeline is 300m in length (280m horizontal. 20m vertical with 4x906 long radius bends). Overall. a minimum of 8 tonnes of ash needs to be conveyed in 1 hour and each blow tank will operate once in each hour. A common pipeline is used which means that only one blow tank can operate at a time. The following conditions apply to the system: 

• Assume blow tanks fill to 90% capacity 
• Allow 30 seconds switch over time from one blow tank to another 
• The fluidised bulk density for fly ash is 979kg/m3 
• Assume steady-state conveying occurs for 90% of the time in each blow tank operating cycle. 
• Assume the minimum conveying velocity for design is 6m/s 
• The Bend factor, B = 0.6 

Determine the air mover requirements (air mass flow rate and pressure) and the conveying pipeline diameter required to meet the duty. For blow tank steady-state design conditions determine the: 
• Air Mass Flow Rate 
• Conveying Line pressure Drop 
• Solids Mass Flow Rate 
• Pipeline inlet and outlet velocities 
• Solids Loading Ratio
