Assignment Task

You will select a domain (either of personal interest to you, or one that you find particularly well-suited to the assignment) and attempt to exhaustively graph ALL of the relationships within that context, and describe some of the graph's logic in writing (more details below).

Pick one of the following domains: 

  • Birds 
  • Animals

Remember that the "backbone" of an ontology is a taxonomy. While you may be interested in the classifications of the objects/resources in your domain, remember that I also expect you to formalize the relationships between them. I expect to see a minimum of 30 objects "nodes" as well as a significant variety of relations associated with them.

Ontology Graph

Produce a graphic representation of an ontology for your domain, similar to the Partial Ontology of Food diagram Figure 6.2. of Glushko's The Discipline of Organizing. You will present this graphic for an in-class critique during our last class.

Relationship Analysis

Analyze the relationships between objects/resources in your ontology using the variety of perspectives described in Chapter 6 of Glushko's TDO. Relate as many of the relevant perspectives as possible within the word limit, then provide some general ideas about how this informs the structure and implementation of descriptions.

Structured Description

Using the same domain, select what you believe is the "primary resource" and produce a sample resource description in JSON or XML (something similar to Example 6.2 of the book). For more info on how to write a structured description please refer to chapter 9 of the book.

Categorization and Classification

Using the same domain, create categories and classify resources into them. The result should be used in designing a wireframe of a website (or web application) that provides user interaction to access the resources. Submit a publicly accessible link to the low fidelity grayscale prototype that represents how the findability of resources is supported in your design.
