Task

Main Objective Of The Assessment
The objective of this task is to allow the student to synthesize the various aspects of the project into one report covering the whole of the project undertaking.

Description Of The Assessment
You will be provided with advice on an appropriate format for your dissertation during lectures and supervision sessions.  You will also be provided with a template for the dissertation which you may choose to adopt.

Learning Outcomes And Marking Criteria
To pass the dissertation at D- grade, you must meet all learning outcomes for the final year project.

The following grade descriptors will be used to determine an overall grade for your dissertation.

Grade A*
In addition to A-band performance in all aspects of the project, the candidate’s project should be of a particularly outstanding nature demonstrating highly sophisticated, critical and thorough understanding of the topic, demonstrating originality and independence of thought, and demonstrating an exceptional ability to communicate complex topics clearly and concisely. The code (if any) quality, English standard and referencing are presented at an exceptional level.

Grade Band A (A+, A, A-)
In addition to the requirements for a grade in B-band, the candidate has clearly demonstrated a sophisticated, critical and thorough understanding of the topic.  They have demonstrated evidence of independence of thought and clearly demonstrate the ability to develop a highly systematic and logical or insightful argument, solution or evaluation. They demonstrate consistently high performance throughout.  Candidate demonstrates excellence in the appropriate use of the relevant literature, theory, methodologies, practices, tools, etc.  They demonstrate a high level of clarity, focus and cogency in communication at the current Level.  The code (if any) quality, English standard and referencing are presented at an excellent level.

Note that an excellent solution without an excellent write-up, or an excellent write-up of a mediocre solution should not be awarded an A-band grade.  All elements should be consistently A-grade.

Grade Band B (B+, B, B-)
In addition to the requirements for a grade in C-band, the candidate has demonstrated a well-developed, critical and comprehensive understanding of their topic. They have demonstrated independence of thought and the ability to develop a systematic and logical or insightful argument, solution or evaluation. Not all elements of the project may be to this standard. The candidate has demonstrated a high degree of competence in their use of relevant literature, theory, methodologies, practices, tools, etc.  The dissertation is written in a clear and focused manner. The code (if any) quality, English standard and referencing are very good.

A B-band grade may be appropriate for a project in which the solution or write-up is excellent, but not both.

Grade Band C (C+, C, C-)
In addition to meeting the learning outcomes, the candidate has demonstrated a systematic understanding of the topic, and the dissertation tells a coherent story (i.e. all sections of the dissertation are related to each other).  The candidate has demonstrated appropriate use of relevant literature, theory, methodologies, practices, tools, etc.  The dissertation is clearly written. The code (if any) quality, English standard and referencing are good.

Grade Band D (D+, D, D-)
All of the learning outcomes have been met at a threshold level.  The dissertation may be disjointed. The code (if any) quality, English standard and referencing are satisfactory.

Grade Band E (E+, E, E-)
Not all the learning outcomes have been met at a threshold level, but there is evidence that with a small amount of additional work, the student should be able to meet the minimum learning outcomes, for example if the Board of Examiners offered a reassessment to the candidate. The code (if any) quality, English standard and referencing are poor.

Grade F
Few or zero learning outcomes have been met, and a significant amount of work would be required to enable the candidate to meet the learning outcomes.

Presentation And Demonstration Of Solution
Prior to submission, you should ensure that you have demonstrated your software or any other solution to your supervisor during normal supervision meetings, and to your second marker during the FYP presentations (Task 4).  If your solution has not been demonstrated to the satisfaction of your markers, you will be invited to a viva voce examination to confirm that your solution works, and that you can demonstrate that you are the author of it.  You may fail Learning Outcome 3 and therefore the final-year project as a whole if you do not do this.
