Consider TENSW aims at improving the traffic conditions for vehicles on M4 during the morning peak period. As a traffic engineering firm, your proposal is to develop an ALINEA-based ramp metering method and compare it with the current as-is situation (no ramp metering). Your proposal has to construct a microscopic model and test the proposed ramp metering method.
The M4 motorway section (the direction towards Sydney, eastbound) is depicted in the figure below (with one off-ramp and one on-ramp) in Aimsun. You can use OpenStreetMap to import the topology of the segment. Try to build the topology of the network as accurately as possible.
The motorway section is approximately extending 600-700 [m] from the west side (upstream) of Hill Road Interchange to 1100 [m] of the east side (downstream) of Hill Road Interchange. In between are the off- and on-ramps to Hill Road. The test concerns the morning peak only from 6 am to 9 am. 

Consider a travel demand (e.g. for 3 hours and in trapezoid shape) on the mainline and the onramp and a turning ratio at the off-ramp such that extensive congestion reaching upstream partially blocking the off-ramp is observed. Then use the ALINEA built-in module of Aimsun to apply ramp metering. Try to optimize the operation of ALlINEA and report the benefits (e.g. in terms of the number of stops, delay, etc.) for both scenarios (with and without ramp metering). Also, report the optimal parameters of ALINEA and other related configurations (e.g. location of detectors, FD, capacity drop).
