The problem:
There are many people with disability who are living in constant pain. A virtual reality intervention could potentially really help these people. For example, a device where they can see themselves through VR as the incredible hulk. If people with disability see themselves as their favorite super hero, this could potentially really help their pain management.
 

The process:
In this assessment item we follow the design thinking paradigm and apply the idea that interaction design begins with empathy and problematizing in order to explore a problem space. You will engage with actual users throughout your work as a core part of your process.
Through your analysis you will identify a potential technology solution that would address a problem they or their clients are experiencing. You are free to explore any potential problem and solution that you identify from talking with HabITec.
 

Stage 1:
Problematize to explore the problem space. Empathising with users is critical to the exploration of the design space, so you will need to acquire insights from 2-3 people from the target user group. We will have people from HabITec involved with several workshops during the trimester, and you are welcome to talk to any family or friends who might represent your target participants.
As you problematize you will need to critically consider your assumptions and the claims you are making.
You will need to clearly define the problem
Evolve a conceptual model and Ideate a potential solution for the problem space (consider traditional and emerging technology mediums). The solution may be the creation of a new technology application, or it may involve the use of existing technology in an innovative way. If you are using existing technology, you need to show that the solution is feasible: for example, if your application includes blood pressure data captured from a wearable device, then you need to find an actual wearable device that measures blood pressure and can provide that data in a format you can use.
 

Stage 2:
Develop medium fidelity prototypes (can be non functional or functional: develop a paper prototype, or use a mock up interactive tool such as Just In Mind or Adobe XD. Axure is an industry level prototyping tool that offers a free student licence. Prototypes using existing hardware solutions should be video captured for demonstration)
Formally test your prototype with 2-3 real people (same or different than those used in Part 1) and make recommendations for the next iteration of your solution.
Through the experience of the process you will show evidence of critical and reflective design and demonstrate evidence of considering emotional and persuasive design, as well as give evidence of having thought through any potential ethical implications. Throughout your experience you will critically reflect on your design philosophy and how you may be applying it or, indeed, how you may wish to modify it.  You will also demonstrate your ability to communicate the process and ideas in writing, and visually.

Present your findings from analysing your data: who are the people in your design space? What are their concerns and issues? What do they need? What do they want?
Problem DefinitionThe problem definition stage analyses and presents the problem space provided in your scenario as it relates to your observations of the people in your design space outlined in the previous section. Describe your approach to problematization.
Methods UsedWhat methods did you use and why? This may include your methods from section 2.1, and should build on these with specific problem-based methods, such as empathy mapping, Point Of View problem statement, “How might we” questions, Why-How laddering.
OutcomesWhat did you find? This analysis should be rich and detailed, supported by your research and design tools. This analysis will inform section 3.3.
Problem StatementProblem statements are human centred, broad enough to support your creativity, and narrow enough to define the situation. Present a clear problem statement that defines your problem space as it related to your audience and will support your ideation process.
IdeationThis stage presents your ideas generation, considering different concepts and outcomes. You should ideate several ideas (1-2 ideas per team member): you will then select an idea to prototype in section 5. Your ideas should be feasible with current technology, and within the constraints of your audience and problem statement.
Describe your ideation process, and the ideas you have generated. Present them clearly, and identify pros and cons of each idea.
PrototypeSelect one of your ideas from the ideation phase, and use design tools to develop a medium fidelity prototype for your product – this might be a paper prototype, mock up, minimally functional interactive etc.
Give a formal design specification for your design choices (such as layout, visual elements, icons, graphics, style, colour palette etc). Justify your choices based on your people and problem definition.
Clearly outline your interaction design choices to describe how and where people would use this product, and how it would fit in their lives. How would it help solve their issues and problems? (hint: what design tools do you know that would help you to present this information?)
Prototype at least 3 elements of your idea. Give each element a title and a description explaining how each example would be used. Your prototype should have sufficient detail to support testing (so more than simply 3 different screen designs).
