Highlights
The assignment involves creating a ‘story’ that speaks to funding bodies about the merits of supporting community-based work. It will involve conducting literature-based research and preparing a rationale for a project that needs funding.
The purpose of this assignment is to:
• Research community needs from a range of sources, including organisational documents, government data, and research literature
• Undertake the development of a community project or program
• Develop skills in framing a convincing ‘story’ that will interest funding groups
Some things to consider for your assignment:
• Your proposal should come from a particular community group or organisation. This might be a small group or larger non-government organisation, and it may be in Australia or outside it. Use a range of sources to research this group (i.e. data you derive from official material such as brochures, newspaper articles, journals, books, websites or other documented sources).
• Develop an idea for a community development project for the community group you have identified, and rationale for why funds should be committed to this project
• You should view a number funding application pro formas, templates or online application processes as this will help you put together a preferred structure for your proposal. We will also have a workshop dedicated to writing funding proposals.
• The structure of your proposal is up to you, and will depend on a number of factors, including the type of project and the type of community organisation, however you should take particular note of the structures suggested. Your proposal should at least include:
A brief cover letter
Information about the community group and its key objectives, background and current projects
A background to the project and why it is needed
Project goals
Activities and methodology: what will the project do? how will it work?
Evaluation ideas
A budget
• Examples of community development projects or initiatives include: establishing and maintaining a neighbourhood house; building a cooperative economic enterprise; a community-based bus service; creating a local community garden or permaculture centre; recruiting medical practitioners to a rural town; setting up a residential site for the training of young people in arts enterprises; undertaking health promotion initiatives; setting up a career guidance facility for a marginalised group; developing targeted radio messages about sexuality; establishing an Indigenous tourism business in a remote community
