Analysis Case Study
Robin and Marian
Robin and Marian is a new innovative trial in Heathrow Compass Centre. In this trial, there are two mobile robots available for visitors to interact within the waiting area. This center has more than 400 visitors per day and the two receptionists are always busy dealing with visitors’ queries. There is a number of meeting rooms, toilets and refreshment area in the waiting area, which visitors can access.
Robots require extensive information about their environment in order to function effectively. This information comes from the sensors which then will be analyzed by a GPS receiver to calculate robots’ position and movement. Robots are programmed with a map of the location and certain spots to function efficiently.
Visitors can interact with robots by talking to them or touching their screen and select the desired function. These robots have a base location. When their task is finished or if they are idle they will go to this location. In the case of being idle in the base location for more than 5 minutes, they will move on a given path which normally has some visitors. As soon as their sensors find a visitor obstacle, they will offer their help. Some visitors find this frustrating while others like the interaction and will interact with the robot out of curiosity. The interaction design of these robots has been commissioned by Heathrow innovation Unit to UWL Interactive, which needs to evaluate the current usability and user experience of the robot and improve it.
