The aim of this assessment is for you to demonstrate the integration of research skills to inform teaching and learning in nursing in the development of a teaching plan in two pieces of work:

1. written paper and

2. creating a lesson plan for conducting a teaching session for a skill to Mrs Philpott. 

2. What are you going to teach Mrs Philpott?

Based on your knowledge of Mrs Philpott's history and within your scope of practice, choose one of the following psychomotor skills that you would like to teach her:

  • Taking her own blood pressure (BP)
  • Administering anticoagulant e.g, Clexane injection
  • Blood glucose level's (monitoring and recording)

3. Meet Mrs Philpott

Mrs Philpott is a 78-year-old pensioner who;

  • identifies as she/her
  • lives independently in a one-bedroom ground floor unit in country Victoria.
  • does not drive.

  • has two adult children: A son, John, who is single and lives nearby on a farm and a daughter, Liz, who moved to Northern Queensland with her husband two children years ago. She has a good relationship with both children but misses the interaction she had with her daughter. Her son rarely visits as he is very busy running the farm alone.
  • Retired from her work as a garden nursery worker 15 years ago.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Social drinker.
  • No known allergies.
  • History of: Type 2 diabetes (with no diabetes management plan); Hypertension (not controlled with medication)
  • BMI of 32, with significant weight gain (15kg) since the death of her husband. Prior to this she walked daily with a local social club.

History of Presenting Complaint/Admission to Hospital

Last week Mrs Philpott tripped when getting out of the shower fracturing her left neck of femur (NOF). She was taken by ambulance to the nearest tertiary hospital, 60 km away from her home, where she underwent a total hip replacement (THR). She has a small vertical incision and absorbable sutures from the surgery, covered with an occlusive dressing, and is walking slowly with a frame after receiving physiotherapy rehab over the last week. She currently requires assistance with showering but can toilet independently. You have been caring for Mrs Philpott on the day shift since she came to the orthopaedic ward where you are working as an RN. She has told you that she has not been eating as well as she should or taking as much care of herself as she knows she should. She admits to being ‘sad’ most of the time and does not want a big fuss with people coming in and out of the house all the time when she goes home.

History of Presenting Complaint/Admission to Hospital

During handover this morning you learn that she will be discharged home tomorrow following a review by the Aged Care Assessment team with the following care requirements;

  • Hospital in the Home to attend regularly to assist with activities of daily living (ADL)
  • Required to take her Blood Pressure (BP) at home daily with a digital sphygmomanometer
  • Daily blood glucose (BGL) level
  • Administering anticoagulant e.g, Clexane injection
  • Review by her GP for medication and pain management
