Abstract
— Providing a security system for any electrical equipment has become a vital interest in which the latest technologies are being adopted to serve this purpose. University classrooms usually implement automatic door lock attached with a sensor to enable access into the classroom. The access door needs a more autonomous, integrated, and intelligent functionality to improve smart classroom’s usability. This work presents the development of a secure door lock system by utilizing Quick Response (QR) technology and Raspberry Pi processor for accessing the university laboratory or classroom where the authorized person will also be able to monitor who have accessed to the classroom or laboratory. The data logging system is developed to track the ingoing and outgoing activities when accessing the security door from the web-based website server. In this vein, the authorized individuals are only the ones who will get the permission to access the doors. This is a preliminary work to test the system’s functionality to be used for different properties and facilities such as office, classroom and laboratory. Based on the result and data collection, the testbed development has worked properly as an initial study to provide a smart security door using QR code system.
I. INTRODUCTION
An electronic lock is a secure device which operates through electric current. Recently, keyless electronic door locks have become one of the most popular security systems that are being installed in many residents and business places as well as the classroom university. The key characteristic behind such system lies on the reliability in which the authorized individuals can obtain permission to access the doors throughout a secure system that has an interactive interface such as using fingerprint or using designated password to enter it [1]. Security vulnerability is mainly caused by the keys of mechanical door lock often lost, copied or stolen. To overcome the problem, keyless door lock systems have been introduced but the technology also has several security issues, for instance, an intruder can copy the access code or password to access the door. In addition, existing system that utilizing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is costly and complex. Therefore, QR scanner is believed as the best method which is much cheaper than RFID, and easy to handle [2]. Apart from that, additional security such as the monitoring device is also important. Without monitoring system, the laboratory administrator will not have information of the activity happen in the classroom or laboratory. Apart from that, in high institution, securing the classroom has become one of the concerning issues facing by many facilities department. When the lecturers or educators are not around and the students need to do self-learning, the activity in the classroom needs to be monitored. In order to prevent illegal activity such as burglary and misused of the equipment inside the class, it is necessary to observe who have accessed into the classroom at a specific time. For this matter, smart security door system has been proposed to strengthen the security control. Therefore, the study is aimed to develop a web-based security door using QR code system for the university laboratory where at the same time the authorized person can perform access monitoring the students’ attendance. The data logging system is developed to monitor the ingoing and outgoing activities when accessing the security door from the web-based website server. To test the system functionality, the number of students and staffs accessing the room during working hours were recorded.
II. LITERATURE REVIEW
Securing the keyless door system is very important in order to avoid any intruder accessed the room without being monitored by the authorized person. Furthermore, it is also to avoid any unwanted cases such as equipment being stolen in the laboratory or classroom. According to previous work by Farooq [3], a secure access control system based on RFID has been developed that use the RFID tag as the access system. To complete the required task, the system needed to combine RFID technology and biometrics. When the RFID reader installed at the entrance of hostel detected the RFID tag, the system captured the user image and scanned the database for a match. If both the card and captured image belong to the registered user, entrance door will be opened; otherwise the system turned on the alarm and alerted the security via emergency call through GSM modem in order to address the situation. The downside of this project is that if the person lost the RFID tag, the cost to create another RFID tag was more expensive and it was less financial friendly [4]. Furthermore, the RFID system usually involves an expensive piece of scanning equipment that is designed to do one task only – scan and decode RFID tags. Compared to the proposed project that implemented QR code, it is much more accessible and affordable compared to RFID and it can print
