Assessment Background

As explained in your Module Outline and on Learn, the assessment structure for DIAL5111/d/p/w has two components, namely ICE Tasks and the Portfolio of Evidence.

ICE Tasks

ICE stands for Integrated Curriculum Engagement, and the various short tasks that you will work on during the course of the semester are aimed at helping you to practise and develop some of the key skills you will need for your PoE. A minimum of four tasks need to be completed – these could be Learn activities, tasks set by your lecturer/tutor, or a combination. Your lecturer/tutor will indicate to you which tasks/activities will count towards your ICE Task final mark.

PoE Topic – Freedom of Speech in Higher Education

The topic of this PoE is for you to critically evaluate the following statement: • Lecturers and students at tertiary institutions in South Africa must be allowed freedom of speech. The issue of freedom of speech/expression has become a controversial topic in higher education both in South Africa and globally. The academic nature of higher education often means that traditional or more conservative boundaries and norms are sometimes questioned and critiqued – often resulting in uncomfortable conversations around the nature of humanity, scientific and social progress, and what is “right” or “wrong”, or “good” or “bad”.

The argument is often made that it is both the place and right of higher education – and the people within it – to pose these difficult questions and challenge these norms, in order to help society evolve and prosper. Yet, in South Africa in particular – with our history of racial, sexual and gender-based discrimination – such debates on freedom of speech often have to be weighed alongside the protections against hate speech within our Constitution, while still allowing people the right to express their religious and/or cultural beliefs. In recent years, a number of academics at tertiary education institutions both locally and internationally have lost their jobs or faced some form of sanction as a result of expressing ideas that universities and students found offensive. Similarly, a number of higher education students have been suspended or expelled because of what was ruled offensive commentary – either made in person, or virtually through social media and other such platforms
