Evaluating Success in South African Higher Education

The topic on which all the DIAL5111 projects focus is for you to critically evaluate the following statement:

• Currently, higher education is too difficult to pass in South Africa. The pass mark should be lowered to 30% for all higher education modules.

In recent years, many challenging questions have arisen around the purpose and importance of higher education: Is higher education a human right? Is it an individual, societal, or even governmental responsibility? In what ways, and for what purposes, do students in higher education need to be assessed? What determines success in higher education, and is this success the same for all students why? In South Africa, in particular with our history of racial, genderbased and socio-economic disadvantages such questions can be increasingly difficult to answer or justify with any certainty.

With the above in mind, you need to decide what position you will adopt on this topic and on the provided statement itself. Do you agree with the statement? Why? Do you disagree? Why? Do you agree and/or disagree with certain parts of the statement? Which parts, and why?

1. Searching for and Referencing Resources

Open the Google Scholar search engine on The IIE Library’s e-shelf of electronic databases, and search for student success South Africa, and South African tertiary higher education, as well as any other similar key phrases that you think may be useful for finding information on the given project topic.

Review all the search results and select five resources that you think are relevant to the given project topic, and which could provide you with a credible means of supporting your position on the topic either by providing evidence of why your position is valid or by providing a different perspective on the topic that you could use in some way.

Write down the full and accurate IIE Harvard references for your five selected resources. Work through the Q.1 marking rubrics in Appendix A to see how you will be marked.

2. Evaluating Resources Using the CRAAP Test

From your five resources in Question 1, select one resource that you think is the most relevant, credible, and useful for the project topic and your position on it.

Write five paragraphs evaluating your chosen resource using the CRAAP test one paragraph per test element. In each paragraph, make sure you include an explanation of how you can determine that element of the CRAAP test from the resource content and/or other sources, and why that element is important in the context of the project topic and your position on it.
