Introduction:
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to observe the difference in reactivity between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.
Procedure:
Part 1: Bromine Water
1) Put 1mL of cyclohexane into a test tube
2) Add 15 drops of bromine water.
3) Place a stopper on top of the test tube and shake vigorously for 1-2 minutes.
4) Record your observations.
5) Test for the presence of hydrogen bromide by holding a piece of moist blue litmus paper
at the mouth of the test tube.
6) Record your observations
7) Repeat steps 1-6 with cyclohexene.
Part 2: Potassium Permanganate
8) Place 5mL of potassium permanganate solution in two separate test tubes.
9) Add 5 drops of cyclohexane to one of the test tubes and 5 drops of cyclohexene to the other test tube.
10) Placer stoppers on the test tubes and shake vigorously for 1-2 minutes.
11) Record your observations.
