Task Rationale

Social justice and healthcare outcomes are a deeply intertwined relationship. The definition of social justice according to the United Nations (UN), (2025) is “an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations.” In healthcare, social justice aims to ensure equal access to quality healthcare for all, regardless of their socioeconomic status, social determinants, race or gender (UN, 2025). It is essential that through everyday practice as healthcare professionals, a holistic approach is implemented to employ social justice in our practice to enhance healthcare outcomes for all. Therefore, for this assignment, you will create a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation and a short report on the questions listed on page two.

Assessment Task

The task is to choose one element of social justice that impacts healthcare outcomes for a minority group and create a digital presentation (Powerpoint with video) discussing all the questions listed below. Students are also required to submit a 500 – word short report summarising how they will implement the element of social justice in their nursing practice for the future, with reference to scholarly articles. Please note there are 2 different submission points for the digital presentation and the short report.

interactive artificial intelligence (AI)

Use of Artificial Intelligence: Generative AI can be useful in the planning stages, but do NOT copy and paste into your assignment as this may break academic integrity rules. You can use the CDU Grammarly or Word Editor as spelling and grammar checks. Please cite this.

Furthermore, if you are utilising AI or Grammarly, can you please write a brief process statement that explains how you completed the assignment, including if and how you used any AI tools or Grammarly to assist you, such as for templates or formulating ideas. Specifically in which areas you utilised AI and how you verified that the information was correct. This can be placed as an appendix after the reference list.

Remember:

Any work submitted for a mark must:
a. represent a sincere demonstration of your human efforts, skills and subject knowledge that you will be accountable for.
b. adhere to the guidelines for AI use set for the assessment task.
c. reflect the University’s commitment to academic integrity and ethical behaviour.

Inappropriate AI use and/or AI use without acknowledgement will be considered a breach of academic integrity.

Assessment Summary and Mentor-Guided Approach

Assessment Requirements

The task focuses on social justice in healthcare outcomes for a minority group, requiring students to:

  1. Digital Presentation (10 minutes)

    • Choose one element of social justice impacting healthcare outcomes for a minority group.

    • Analyse how social determinants of health affect this element.

    • Discuss how government or non-government organizations are inhibiting social justice for this group.

    • Identify and describe a local initiative improving social justice for the group and link it to relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  2. Short Report (500 words)

    • Explain how, as a future Registered Nurse, you would implement the chosen element of social justice in nursing practice.

    • Support with scholarly articles and credible references.

  3. AI Use & Process Statement

    • Students may use AI/Grammarly for planning, grammar checks, or idea generation but must not copy text directly.

    • They must include a process statement (as an appendix) describing where and how AI tools were used, and how accuracy was verified.

  4. Learning Objectives to be Achieved

    • Critically analyse roles of individuals, communities, and organizations in promoting global health.

    • Examine health professionals’ roles in responding to global health emergencies.

    • Formulate strategies addressing global health priorities and promoting health across the lifespan.

Mentor-Guided Approach

Step 1: Understanding the Task

The mentor first guided the student in carefully reading the assessment instructions. The focus was clarified: selecting one element of social justice (e.g., health equity, access to care, cultural safety) and linking it to a minority group.

Step 2: Structuring the Presentation

The mentor helped design a logical structure for the presentation:

  • Introduction – define social justice and introduce the minority group.

  • Impact of Social Determinants – analyse how poverty, education, housing, or discrimination affect healthcare outcomes.

  • Barriers from Organizations – give one example of government/non-government policy/practice limiting equity.

  • Local Initiative – identify a community or health program, link it to SDGs, and show its effectiveness.

  • Conclusion – reinforce the importance of promoting equity in healthcare.

The student was encouraged to use visuals, statistics, and case examples for engagement.

Step 3: Developing the Short Report

The mentor guided the student to connect the presentation topic to future nursing practice. Steps included:

  • Writing an introduction outlining the chosen element of social justice.

  • Explaining implementation in practice – for example, culturally competent care, advocacy for marginalized groups, or promoting equal access.

  • Supporting with scholarly articles and linking strategies to nursing codes of ethics.

  • Summarising how these strategies will improve patient outcomes.

Step 4: Academic Integrity and AI Use

The mentor highlighted CDU’s rules on AI. The student used AI tools only for:

  • Generating draft structures for the report.

  • Checking grammar and sentence flow with Grammarly.

  • Fact-checking with scholarly sources to validate AI-generated ideas.
A process statement was drafted for transparency.

Step 5: Outcome and Learning Objectives Achieved

By following the step-by-step process, the student produced:

  • A well-structured presentation explaining the chosen element of social justice and linking it to real-world strategies and SDGs.

  • A concise 500-word report showing how the principles will be embedded in nursing practice.

  • A clear process statement maintaining academic integrity.

The assessment successfully covered all learning objectives:

  • LO3: Analysis of the role of individuals, communities, and organizations in global health.

  • LO4: Examination of healthcare professionals’ role in emergencies.

  • LO5: Development of strategies for global health priorities.
