Task Rationale

Social justice and healthcare outcomes are a deeply intertwined relationship. The definition of social justice according to the United Nations (UN), (2025) is “an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations.” In healthcare, social justice aims to ensure equal access to quality healthcare for all, regardless of their socioeconomic status, social determinants, race or gender (UN, 2025). It is essential that through everyday practice as healthcare professionals, a holistic approach is implemented to employ social justice in our practice to enhance healthcare outcomes for all. Therefore, for this assignment, you will create a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation and a short report on the questions listed on page two.

Assessment Task

The task is to choose one element of social justice that impacts healthcare outcomes for a minority group and create a digital presentation (Powerpoint with video) discussing all the questions listed below. Students are also required to submit a 500 – word short report summarising how they will implement the element of social justice in their nursing practice for the future, with reference to scholarly articles. Please note there are 2 different submission points for the digital presentation and the short report.

Learning Objectives

• 3 - Critically analyse the role of individuals, communities, national and international organizations in promoting global health

• 4 - Examine the role of health professionals in response to global health emergencies

• 5 - Formulate strategies that address global health priorities and promote global health across the lifespan

Assignment Questions

Part 1: Presentation:

1. How do the social determinants of health impact on your chosen social justice element?

2. Discuss a specific strategy in which a government or non-government organization is inhibiting social justice in your chosen minority group.

3. Identify and describe a specific local initiative that aims at increasing social justice in your minority group to improve healthcare outcomes. Outline the sustainable development goals the initiative is linked to and why.

Part 2: Short report:

1. As a future Registered Nurse, how will you implement the element of social justice discussed in your digital presentation into your future nursing practice? (Please refer to and reference scholarly articles to provide credibility to your response).

Assessment Requirements

   • They must include a process statement (as an appendix) describing where and how AI tools were used, and how accuracy was verified.

4. Learning Objectives to be Achieved

   • Examine health professionals’ roles in responding to global health emergencies.

   • Formulate strategies addressing global health priorities and promoting health across the lifespan.

Mentor-Guided Approach

Step 1: Understanding the Task

The mentor first guided the student in carefully reading the assessment instructions. The focus was clarified: selecting one element of social justice (e.g., health equity, access to care, cultural safety) and linking it to a minority group.

Step 2: Structuring the Presentation

The mentor helped design a logical structure for the presentation:

• Introduction – define social justice and introduce the minority group.

• Impact of Social Determinants – analyse how poverty, education, housing, or discrimination affect healthcare outcomes.

• Barriers from Organizations – give one example of government/non-government policy/practice limiting equity.

• Local Initiative – identify a community or health program, link it to SDGs, and show its effectiveness.

• Conclusion – reinforce the importance of promoting equity in healthcare.

Step 3: Developing the Short Report

The mentor guided the student to connect the presentation topic to future nursing practice. Steps included:

• Writing an introduction outlining the chosen element of social justice.

• Explaining implementation in practice – for example, culturally competent care, advocacy for marginalized groups, or promoting equal access.

• Supporting with scholarly articles and linking strategies to nursing codes of ethics.

• Summarising how these strategies will improve patient outcomes.
