Case study

You work at a counseling clinic situated in a low socio-economic status community. characterized by a high prevalence of crime and substance abuse. Jane, 23 years of age, stopped by the clinic to ask for advice. Jane temporarily lives with her boyfriend who she has dated for a little over 3 years. Jane and Mark first started experimenting with 'tik', soon after her father's passing just over 21 months ago. She described her father as being her rock: "He was always there for me, supporting me, listening to me, providing for me, advising me and encouraging me". He was diagnosed with cancer and died within 7 months, following his diagnosis. "My mother was never the same since my brother's passing at the age of 14, it's been 9 years since then. Ever since she has been struggling with depression and started to drink excessively. My dad really held the household together".

Mark and Jane started off using 'tik' only on weekends, usually on a Friday, now their usage has increased to every second day. They both work at restaurants and would take a hit whenever dealing with difficult clients. She describes their jobs as being demanding and having to deal with other people's "Shit" constantly, "they are never happy" and "they don't always give tips, so I never know how much money I will go home with. My mom put me out of the house, so I need a place to stay and I need money for rent". Jane is desperately looking for work as she owes her supplier more than 34k. She said if she does not manage to get a second job, she will have to work for her supplier, to 'work off her debt.

What is a case study?

Davis (1993) defines case studies as stories that represent real, complex and contextualized situations, which often involve dilemmas, conflicts or problems with no obvious solution. Case studies can take different forms, ranging from simple situations to complex scenarios, and can be presented as multiple or single cases, as well as simulations based on real problems or based on people's own experiences (De Miguel, 2005).

The student's ability to: unpack and demonstrate their understanding of a case, to apply a theoretical approach and literature to better understand and make sense of a case will be assessed. Furthermore, the student's ability to demonstrate their engagement in critical thinking, in following a logical decision-making process, on reflecting and evaluating potential solutions to the given dilemmas, demonstrating how they can integrate theory and practical application and in applying their knowledge to propose potential solutions will be assessed.
