Case Study
Angelica
You are a family social working in a Christian NGO in central Queensland.
19-year-old Angelica has down syndrome and lives with her parents near your organisation. Angelica loves to work in the garden and spend time with her pet. She has just finished specialist school and is soon to start a program in the community. In the specialist school, she met her boyfriend Troy who also has down syndrome. They have been together for 2 years and are talking about starting a family.
Her parents are seeking your assistance as they want Angelica to accept some form of on-going birth control. They are concerned that Angelica and Troy are not capable of raising a baby and do not see parenthood as something that they would be able to achieve successfully. Angelica however has refused to consider this and has insisted that she wants to have a baby with her boyfriend. She is increasingly upset that she is not being treated like “other young girls” who can make decisions about their bodies and relationships.
You have met recently with Angelica and she said she has been bullied all her life “for being different” and meeting Troy was “the best thing that has ever happened to her”. She adds that since meeting him she doesn’t feel “different and down all the time” and that he makes her feel beautiful. She says that being a mother would make her happy and that she has a right to being a mom “like everybody else” and she is positive that she will be a great parent because she is patient and loving.
