1. Students are required to choose ONE area for research (topics 1 to 4) from the areas outlined below. 

The essay requires a research component, so make sure you have a thorough look at any of the relevant extended reading/resources from the course (to be located on page 2 of each session’s slides) as well as independent research such as Australian and international journal articles. 

Also, identify any recent cases and/or law reform or parliamentary inquiries, government discussion papers, etc. (There are a number of these in the optional extended reading list for the course.) A thorough reading of the literature (including the relevant part of your text or prescribed reading from the course) is needed for you to know what the key issues are. 

Some of the topics listed have referred to Australia in the topic sentence – you may however choose any country in the world instead of Australia – or you may choose to make comparison between two countries in your chosen topic.
