A SUGGESTED 10-STEP STRATEGY FOR APPROACHING THE EXAM ESSAYS
Examine marking criteria: make sure you understand.
Interpret essay questions: What exactly is the question asking? (Do not fall into the trap of
answering a different question.)
Brainstorm lectures systematically: work through each lecture summary (or notes),identifying and extracting relevant material (note possible overlap across essays).
Brainstorm tutorial exercises systematically.
Brainstorm set readings systematically.
For each essay question, collate material: make a list of the points you will discuss in your essay, and the material relevant to each point.
Draw a structure diagram (not necessarily a deductively valid casting) of your essay content and argument: introduction, major sections, subsections, how they connect/flow, conclusion.
Practise writing an essay (taking approx 30 minutes), by fleshing out your structure diagram.
Revise and prepare by reading over your essay and memorising the major points of your structure diagram.
Check back that your essay meets all five criteria.
