Highlights
The proposed structure for the presentation of the essay:
Title – this must be an accurate description of the content of the essay. (You do not need a cover sheet)
Introduction (approximately 150 words – 3 marks) - make clear to the reader what you intend to discuss in the body of the essay, i.e. identify key points and the order in which you will discuss them. At the end of the introduction include a thesis statement. This is a statement that establishes your central argument or message about the topic.
Body of essay – use each paragraph to discuss one aspect of the topic identified in your introduction. You are not restricted to three paragraphs, which is what you may have been advised previously. When drafting, you may wish to use headings to help organise your writing, but you may want to delete them before submission. We are aware you are being given this assignment very early in you course and have, therefore provided you with the following suggested essay structure:
The conclusion (approximately 150 words – 3 marks) – this is a summary of key points already discussed, together with a resolution. No additional information should be included.
References - a minimum of 8 from the set texts. In addition to this, you may include references from your wider reading. References demonstrate a breadth of reading and contribute to creating a scholarly and authoritative essay. You should use references to support key points throughout the essay. You may have been told you should not use references in the introduction and conclusion. Whilst it is not imperative, you may use references in both, as appropriate
Review your draft essay before submission, using the following guidelines from Grellier, J. & Goerke, V. (2014) Chapter Nine, how to write an academic essay pp 128-143. Using this feedback edit your essay.
Check all referencing: Reference your sources both in-text and at the end of the text. All ideas must be referenced to the source. When using the exact words in the text you must use quotation marks and indicate page numbers. Use Grellier, J. & Goerke, V. (2014). Communication toolkit. (3rd ed.). Melbourne, Vic.: Cengage pp 51-72 to guide you.
When complete, submit the essay via Turnitin.
