The aim of this exercise is to use your research skills to write an essay to demonstrate your understandings of key themes arising in the topics from weeks 10-12, and of broader themes in the unit overall. The purpose of this task is to read widely and establish links between theory and practical developments in criminal justice, applying insights from the relevant unit content. Marks will be awarded for research, argument and critical engagement with the course materials, as well as creative or independent thought.
Students must choose ONLY ONE of the following questions and write an essay:

Question 1:
Discuss the hybrid model of intervention that currently exist in the Australian youth justice system with specific reference to contemporary responses to youth offending.  
(Your discussion must include definitions of what you understand by ‘welfare concerns’, ‘justice concerns’, and ‘corporatism concerns’ and discuss issues such as detention or bail, or law reform (diversionary legislation etc.) Given these matters cannot be discussed in the abstract, you MUST focus your answer on an Australian jurisdiction of your choosing – i.e a State or Territory).

Question 2:
Discuss inequalities and social exclusion in the operation of the Australian criminal justice system.   (Your discussion must include issues of gender, race, ethnicity, age and/or class and specific aspects of the criminal justice system as they affect specific social minorities).

Question 3:
Released in 2017, the Interim Report of the Royal Commission into the Protections and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory stated that ‘the evidence presented to the Commission so far reveals a youth detention system that is likely to leave many children and young people more damaged than when they entered’ (White and Gouda 2017, p.3). With specific reference to Australia's First Nation youth, discuss why this might be the case and what possible alternatives there may be to incarcerating young people.
