We are so often taught to do needs assessments in public health to know what health issues exist within a community. When I researched the literature for my PhD, I found that all the articles about African immigrants were about their problems and needs. It painted them in a bad light and overlooked the strengths that African immigrants possess, such as high educational achievement and strong community spirit. Therefore, when I constructed my interview questions, I asked about the needs of the community in term of health but I also applied a strengths-based approach by asking about the characteristics of the community that contributed to health. 
Thoughts and Feelings
Although I felt uncomfortable reading the negative research, I also felt that talking about the strengths of the community was a bit reductionist and was in danger of stereotyping the community. It also put a lot of pressure on the community to use their strengths to address their own issues when they were time-poor from working long hours in low-wage jobs. 
Rational discourse
The literature on strengths-based approaches described these approaches as empowering for communities, which they have the potential to be.1 However, there is also a danger of stereotyping and generalising, which hides the diversity of this community.2 Additionally, highlighting the strengths of the community can also lead to expectations that the community use those strengths to address their health issues, which can place unrealistic burdens on community members.3 Focusing on strengths can also obscure structural issues that are contributing to their health issues.4 For example, the African immigrant community in Chicago is well educated but has a low average income because discrimination in the workplace forces them into low-paid occupations.5 No matter the strengths evident through their education, discrimination that keeps them in poverty will limit any progress towards health and wellbeing.
