(500 words)
- Detailed Requirements:
- Part One: Management Consultancy Report Section - c. 3000 words.
- Work with your group to produce this.
- Strategic Management Analysis Exercise. Identify an organization to carry out a strategic management analysis on. Report on the main strategic challenges it faces and develop a strategic approach for the next three-five years. In your report you should address how the organization should make the case for change with its stakeholders and you should also incorporate a discussion of the ethical challenges your company is likely to face.
- How you should approach this:
- For the Strategic Management analysis exercise you should focus on firms that are publicly listed on a stock exchange who are required to report annually, and these annual reports are a useful starting point for your research.
- • Starting to look at your unit of analysis in a broad way and then tapering down to the specific is likely to be helpful - you may find more information is available about some aspects of a firm’s strategy than others so may want to tailor your inquiry to do this.
- • To find information on companies - the corporate website, including the annual reports, of many companies is usually a good starting point, as you can often get a lot of information there aimed at investors such as the official line on the corporate strategy and structure, the company CSR policy and support for any philanthropic foundations, as well as a statement of financial position. If a UK or Chinese firm, IBIS world should contain a relevant industry profile., while Mintel should be useful to discern the firm’s market position. You should also search the Financial Times and perhaps other newspapers like The Economist, or newspapers from the firm’s home country if you are able to access them. The websites of the big accountancy firms such as Deloitte or KPMG sometimes also include useful reports and industry overviews. Do not overlook other resources published by the company also if useful evidence of a strategy, for instance social media posts. As ever you should also use Google Scholar or the Social Sciences Citation Index to see if there are any useful academic sources relevant to the company or industry and check to see if there are any useful contextual books in the library.
- • Remember, searching for information can take a long time, but persist, and have a rigorous filing strategy to keep track of things that you find.
- • When writing up, apply frameworks and theories that you have learned in your study to assess your company. Work through the basic strategy process of analysing the problems, choosing a strategy, and thinking about how to implement it. You should reference the relevant textbooks or academic papers that you adopt these theories from. We expect to see the theories rigorously applied, with the correct context and approach.
- • Remember that this section should be written up individually so you can focus on slightly different aspects from your groupmates. However, you should share the research you have done, and you can also include the same or similar materials in the appendices as these elements are not marked. So, for instance you might do an analysis using a framework for your case that you can share.
- • Think in terms of analysis and evaluation, and the effect of one thing on another. Analysis and evaluation will get you maximum marks, not simply describing your case. So as strategists, think carefully about what your organization should do about the challenges you identify
- • Remember the context of the assessment - you are consultants and need to reflect that you are trying to recommend a course of action for the organisation. So, do this, but remember that you need to provide supporting evidence for the path you think they should take. You could use Mintel or IBIS World here for instance to gather market data, while thinking about the internal resources and capabilities of the firm might also be helpful.
